A Visit With Dad

~Everett Vaughn Powell 1922-2008~

When thinking of the "best" dad....of course....our dad comes to mind.  It is appropriate to tell you that he is the only dad we have had, but in saying that, and the fact that he has always been here for us, is saying a lot, especially when having to put up with 6 women in his life (5 daughters and a wife).  Over the years, with the addition of son-in-laws and grandchildren, as well as great-grandchildren, we have all been grateful for the love of our dad, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather.

For those who know our father, he has been many things to many people.  Dad has inspired so many people with his gift of speaking and love of the Lord.  He always served his communities, not only in the form of pastor to a church, but in his willingness to serve and participate in as many community projects and clubs as possible.

Dad is not a person one soon forgets, as he brings humor, debate and color wherever he is present.  If our dad was a character in a book, he would definitely be a force to be reckoned with, and no matter your opinion, he is a character you remember.  Our dad stands out in a crowd, and everyone who has ever met him, has a story to tell about our dad.

Our dad, through his long career as a pastor in the United Methodist Church of over 30 years, could keep a congregation inspired with his wonderful words and great ability to explain life's uncertainties through God's word.  He still, in his 80s, has brought messages of inspiration and encouragement to various churches, as his retirement from being a minister has allowed.

Those who know dad best, know that he also has a love of entertaining, and when we were little, our dad was a hero.  He could hang a spoon from his nose.  We did not know many dads who could entertain like our dad.  When we were teenagers, the spoon trick suddenly became our cue for exiting the room, but we were always aware how the "little" people loved to be around our dad.  When we became parents, the spoon trick entertained our children and we enjoyed the laughter dad's tricks brought for the enjoyment of our little ones.  Dad is still doing the same spoon trick, along with other numerous entertaining abilities, i.e. the multiplying rabbit family, and it is interesting that now we cherish those happy moments.....(Although, it is true...some tricks still inspire us to exit the room....Ha!).

One of dad's greatest gifts has been his beautiful tenor voice.  We have been blessed to experience dad's singing throughout our life, and we know dad was given this special talent for everyone to experience a little bit of heaven on earth.

Yes, this is our dad, the "best" dad we ever had.

Sadly, our father passed away May 27, 2008.  Oh how we wish we could hear him singing or see that spoon hang from his nose!! We love and miss you dad!!
